The House Budget Resolution cuts programs like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by $200 Billion! Hopefully you've learned about who receives SNAP benefits, and why they need them. Perhaps you have even taken the SNAP Solidarity Challenge. Now it's time to let your representatives know why SNAP is important to you!
The U.S. Bishops affirm that SNAP is an important way for society to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable:
"Adequate and nutritious food is a fundamental human right and a basic need that is integral to protecting the life and dignity of the human person. SNAP is one of the most effective and important federal programs to combat hunger in the nation by helping to feed millions of persons in need every year."
-Most Reverend Stephen E. Blaire, Bishop of Stockton
in a letter to the US House in 2013
. more than 64% of SNAP recipients are in families with children
. more than 36% are in families with members who are elderly or have disabilities
. more than 37% are in working families
. the average SNAP benefit per person per meal is $1.29
